Primary school LED lighting to save £1000s on energy bills
Energy costs reduced by 62% and carbon emissions cut by more than half
Corpus Christi is a Voluntary Aided Catholic Primary School in Bournemouth maintained by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portsmouth.
SaveMoneyCutCarbon is working with Portsmouth Diocese to improve energy efficiency in many of its network of schools.
Corpus Christi, with 426 pupils, is a thriving and forward-looking primary that had investigated the benefits of LED lighting before being introduced to the SaveMoneyCutCarbon team by the Diocese.
SaveMoneyCutCarbon met with school managers to investigate the options and potential for reducing energy costs together with explanation of work processes and funding options
An initial full survey by SaveMoneyCutCarbon showed the exceptional annual savings that the school would achieve through a full LED lighting retrofit.
The experienced SaveMoneyCutCarbon team managed the lighting project from survey to specification, installation, testing and monitoring.
As part of the end-to-end service, SaveMoneyCutCarbon also completed the complex Salix Finance funding application on behalf of the school. This ensured that an interest-free loan would cover the project costs, with repayments covered by energy savings.
The SaveMoneyCutCarbon Field Services team retro-fitted more than 200 lighting units, including panels, tubes, 2D fittings, downlights and lamps across the school properties.
The LED lighting retrofit removed traditional incandescent light bulbs that typically burn out after roughly 1,000 hours and fluorescent tubes that only last 5,000 hours – the light quality degrades well before this.
LED as a light source is very reliable, lasting for over 40,000 hours of continuous usage.
This a major benefit for the school as it can largely eradicate maintenance costs.
LED lighting provides bright, flicker-free lighting for a positive and modern learning environment.
Every light is backed by a no-quibble, five-year manufacturers’ warranty.
- The LED retrofit will reduce lighting bills by more than 62%
- Carbon footprint will be cut by similar amount – 62%
- Full Salix Fund financing at zero interest means the project to be self-financing with payback in under seven years
- Greatly reduced maintenance costs
- Annual savings of nearly £3,500 on lighting bills
“With budgets under pressure, it makes good business sense to be energy efficient and so ensure precious funds for schooling activities are not burned away needlessly.
“The successful LED retrofit at Corpus Christi is another big step in the Portsmouth Diocese strategy to reduce energy costs, not just as a one-off, but sustainably year after year.”
