The Client

The Radisson Blu Manchester Airport is a stylish and contemporary hotel that is just a stone’s throw away from all three terminals by an elevated walkway, the Radisson Blu Hotel at Manchester airport is the ultimate in convenience.

The Brief

The hotel wanted to make the most of a full LED lighting retrofit both front and back of house to cut its energy use and improve lighting quality while maintaining the ambience. At the same time, it was keen to see a solid business case that would raise profitability and cut carbon footprint, provided by SaveMoneyCutCarbon.

Radisson Blu is part of the Carlson Rezidor group, which is focusing on environmental aspects through its Think Planet initiative, aiming to reduce the group’s energy consumption by 20% by the end of 2016.

The group has announced that it is already ahead of that target, thanks wide ranging initiatives, including the work of SaveMoneyCutCarbon.

Over the past two years, the SaveMoneyCutCarbon Field Services team has partnered with Carlson Rezidor hotels to deliver many energy and water-saving projects in the past two years, completing detailed surveys, investment ready proposals, specification, product supply from major manufacturers, UK wide project management and installations.

In 2014, SaveMoneyCutCarbon completed a wide range of Think Planet energy and water-saving projects for Carlson Rezidor on time and on budget, cutting costs by more than £470,000.

The Solution

Hotel management were keen to ensure that the busy property was not affected by any lighting upgrades and the SaveMoneyCutCarbon Field Services team completed an exhaustive survey to identify products and to plan the works.

The comprehensive survey identified the scope and complexity of the project together with the lamp types, render and existing wattages as well as on/burn times and thermodynamics.

The project leaders worked closely with the General Manager and Chief Engineer to ensure a schedule that minimised any disruption to normal hotel operations.

The team upgraded lighting in all areas, including meeting rooms, stairwells, reception back of house, and the exterior. In total the team upgraded more than 1260 panels, tubes, 2D and downlights.

Challenges

The team found an issue with dimming in the meeting rooms as the dimming packs were aged and not compatible with LED. They used intelligent drivers, bypassing and decommissioning the old system.

In rooms that had been changed from meeting rooms to offices, the team used a new wireless system to provide multiple zones.

“This was an excellent project to work on, with a full LED retrofit ensuring maximum energy savings and we enjoyed the challenge of finding a solution to the dimming issues in the meeting rooms. Our knowledge and experience in the hospitality lighting sector helped to identify the right solution and complete the work with minimum disruption to hotel operations.”
