The Client

Radisson Blu Hotel Leeds is a historic art deco building, Grade II listed, that offers elegance and comfort for both business and pleasure guests.

The Brief

The 147-room property is superbly restored, having once been the HQ of Leeds Permanent Building Society, and blends original art deco features with modern amenities so it was crucial that the unique ambience of the hotel was maintained by the lighting retrofit, in all areas, including the 10 conference rooms.

The owners required a full upgrade to energy-saving LED lighting throughout the hotel and also wanted a sound business case for this, which showed substantial, ongoing reductions in electricity and maintenance costs, as well as carbon footprint.

The hotel is part of the Think Planet initiative by Carlson Rezidor to cut the group’s energy consumption by 20% by the end of 2016. The group has announced that it is already ahead of that target, thanks wide ranging initiatives, including the work of SaveMoneyCutCarbon.

SaveMoneyCutCarbon Field Service team has supported Carlson Rezidor hotels across a wide range of energy and water-saving projects in the past two years. Delivering surveys, investment ready proposals, specification, product supply from major manufacturers, UK wide project management & installations.

In 2014, SaveMoneyCutCarbon delivered energy saving Think Planet projects for Carlson Rezidor on time and on budget cutting costs by more than £470,000.

The Solution

The Field Service team installed LED lighting where needed throughout the hotel, including the high level atrium lighting, meeting rooms, stairwells and back-of-house, fitting more than 471 lamps including tubes, panels, 2Ds, downlights, spotlights and bulbs.

The SaveMoneyCutCarbon team conducted a full survey first to ensure the right range and render of luminaires as well as precise number of lamps and fitting types with hours-per-day usage and the lighting thermodynamics.

The team fitted Verbatim products throughout, as well as Ecoled panels along with Lutron smart lighting controls in the meeting rooms.

The Lutron system of wireless sensors, switches, dimmers, and remote controls further adds to energy savings – up to 60%.

It was important that the team did not affect guest satisfaction or the daily operations so it worked closely with management to schedule the retrofit as optimum times, finishing the LED project on schedule and within budget.

"The Leeds Radisson Blu is a landmark hotel with very distinctive architecture and design. We needed to be sure that our lighting matched or improved the previous solution - and the feedback from management is very good."

"We ensured that the busy city centre hotel was not disrupted during the retrofit and we used our extensive knowledge in the hospitality sector to complete the project on time and within budget."
