King’s College London (KCL) is a globally respected university founded in 1828 and it boasts 11 Nobel Prize winners among its alumni.
The university had commissioned a refurbishment of its Franklin-Wilkins Building in Stamford Street near the South Bank, opened in 1915 and home to London Dental Education Centre, study areas, the Franklin-Wilkins Library, restaurant and café.
The refurb included toilet facilities in all areas and KCL wanted to ensure that water savings were maximised, to reinforce its commitment to sustainability and reducing impact on the environment.
The heavily-used building required low-maintenance, robust toilet technology that reduced water usage and KCL had been impressed with Propelair toilets it had installed two years previously in another part of the university.

KCL engaged SaveMoneyCutCarbon to install 153 Propelair toilets in the six-storey building, replacing old units that had standard pans and a mix of cistern sizes between 6 and 9 litres.
The Propelair toilet reduces water use by 80% or more, using patented displaced air technology that removes all waste with a single flush.
It provides hygiene benefits as well, reducing airborne germs by 95% and eliminating 99.9% of waterborne contaminants.
The experienced SaveMoneyCutCarbon team carried out a full drainage survey before starting the installation and identified that the old cast iron pipework needed descaling. The team carried out the full-bore restoration over 2 ½ weeks.
