The Client
Thetford Town Council is a local authority with a range of roles in the historic Norfolk market town and has declared a climate emergency in response to the threats posed by global warming caused by rising greenhouse gas emissions.
The Brief
The council is responding rapidly to growing pressures in the battle against climate change, particularly as the UK is now committed to reducing carbon emissions by 78% by 2035. It engaged with SaveMoneyCutCarbon to map out a strategy that will push as close to net zero as possible and engage the community in a more sustainable approach. The council is determined to make a big impact fast.
The Solution
SaveMoneyCutCarbon used its extensive experience of delivering hundreds of carbon-reducing and energy saving projects for a range of public and private sector organisations to ensure Thetford council developed the best framework for sustainable change.
Following detailed preliminary discussions led by Tina Cunnell, Town Clerk, the SaveMoneyCutCarbon team conducted full energy audits and surveys of council properties including – the Carnegie in Cage Lane, Thetford Guildhall, Castle Park and King’s House and Gardens.
Getting the most comprehensive information is central to the way SaveMoneyCutCarbon works. The Energy Manager and team used the company’s unique Savings Oppoortunity Report Tool (SORT) to deliver a detailed assessment of energy saving opportunities.
The team also delivered a full Retrofit Solutions Audit, using SORT, which focused on energy and water retrofit solutions. All the solutions would deliver significant and ongoing carbon emissions reductions.
On the basis of the full reports, Thetford council commissioned the installation of low-flow eco-taps across the properties surveyed as well as energy-efficient hand dryers. The taps not only ensure much lower annual water consumption, reducing costs, but also deliver carbon reductions as less energy is used to distribute, pump and manage the water.
In total, the energy and water-saving solutions will deliver annual savings of £9605, with rapid payback times and annual carbon reduction of 2.83 tonnes.
