Why choose Beco eco-friendly pet products?

Pets bring immense joy to our lives – they’re the first ones to greet us when we get home from work and comfort us when we’re blue. Beco now make choosing eco-friendly pet products easy! They are durable, reusable, recyclable, biodegradable and less toxic – all elements that protect the planet and prevent climate change.

What are Beco eco-friendly pet products?

The 60 pack of Beco Home Compostable Poop Bags are made from a strong and durable plant-based material called cornstarch – making them completely biodegradable and compostable. Designed to be as strong as any traditional plastic bag, yet they can be disposed of in your garden compost.

To be used alongside the poop bags, the Beco Bag Dispenser which includes 15 degradable poop bags, is made from bamboo, cornstarch and rice husks. It looks and performs exactly the same as plastic, without harming the planet. When it eventually reaches the end of its long life, it will break down naturally when you dispose of it. What’s more, it can fasten onto most leads and fits all standard dog poop bags.

Beco pet bowls are also made from bamboo, cornstarch and rice husks, making a strong, durable and eco-friendly alternative to plastic. Made from natural materials, it will break down once disposed of.

Other eco-friendly pet products include the Wet Food Can Cover – a brilliant substitution for cling-film! It’s made from BPA-free silicone – far better for the planet and your pet’s health. It forms an airtight seal on standard 400g tins and it’s dishwasher safe, no need to worry about mess.

Additionally, their toys are made with the planet and your pet’s happiness in mind. Their recycled soft teddy is made from 100% recycled plastic: each toy is made up of roughly 15 plastic bottles. They are also double-stitched and puncture-proof for a super strong and long-lasting dog toy.

Beco hemp pets toys are also double-stitched, puncture proof and made from recycled plastic but the rope is made from natural hemp and cotton. While this is good for the environment, hemp is also antibacterial to help clean your dog’s teeth. Creating long-lasting toys reduces the need to buy more toys, thus reducing the amount of plastic heading to landfill.

What makes Beco pet products sustainable?

Beco pet bowls and the poop bag dispenser are made from a mixture of bamboo and rice husk. Bamboo is a great eco-friendly alternative to plastic because it grows 30x faster than other trees, it’s regenerative and it requires little maintenance to grow.

Rice husk is a natural by-product of rice farming. It is the hard protective covering of rice grains that are separated from the grain during the milling process. At the end of this process, 78% of the crop is rice and the other 22% is the husk. Rather than wasting and burning the untreated rice husk, it can be used as a material. It’s completely biodegradable, renewable and it resists moisture penetration, making it ideal for pet products.

The combination of rice husk and bamboo creates a material that is as strong and resilient as plastic. However, it is natural and able to break down into the Earth once it is disposed of.

Cornstarch is another plant-based and biodegradable material that will return to the earth at its disposal. It is a carbohydrate extracted from corn. Polylactic acid (PLA) is extracted from the cornstarch to make durable products.

The Beco compostable poop bags are made using plant-based materials such as cornstarch, which means they are certified to completely break down into non-toxic elements such as water, carbon dioxide and biomass that will not harm the environment. Whether you have a compost heap in your garden or a local industrial composting facility – these can be disposed of safely either way. Thinking of leaving your dog poop to rot outside? Find out why not to do that here.

Say goodbye to clingfilm! Beco food can covers are made from BPA-free silicone. Unlike plastic, this means it won’t leak any harmful chemicals into your pet’s food. It’s also long-lasting because it can withstand fluctuating temperatures and constant flexibility without losing its shape. Discover more about BPA here.

Beco pets toys are made from recycled plastic bottles, rubber and hemp. Using recycled bottles in the cloth and stuffing saves them from landfill and reduces more pollution entering the atmosphere. While plastic is already strong, the double stitching gives it another layer of protection for long-lasting playtime.

The rubber is natural and sustainably harvested from the trunk of rubber trees. They are used to withstanding extreme weather in the wild: they are strong while flexible. Combined with rice husk – they are the ideal recipe for pets toys.

Why choose Beco pet products over other non-sustainable options?

Common types of plastic are polycarbonate (PC), polythene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). All of which is made from chemicals that release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Plastic has long-reigned as the choice of material for years and it’s not going anywhere soon, considering it can take thousands of years to break down.

Even then, tiny pieces of plastic will be shed in the process, never fully degrading. These tiny pieces are mistaken for food by wildlife and marine life, resulting in digesting toxins, stomach blockages and ultimately death. Landfill continues to pile up from single-use plastic bottles and teabags to dog bowls and toys.

This is why greener alternatives such as Beco pet products are so vital. Choosing eco-friendly alternatives prevent greenhouse gas emissions and landfill waste that contribute to climate change.

In comparison to plastic, cornstarch is sustainable, renewable and easy to produce. It doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals that will harm the plane and it releases fewer carbon dioxide emissions during production. For example, polystyrene is made from petroleum (crude oil), which is responsible for tons of pollution.

Similarly, bamboo is a great alternative to plastic because it is strong, light and versatile. It is an abundant grass that grows up to one metre per day, making it one of the fastest-growing plants on Earth. It also absorbs more carbon dioxide and produces more oxygen than most other trees.

Silicone is another fantastic alternative to plastic. It is similar to plastic because it is flexible and can be shaped into anything. However, it is superior in that it is more temperature resistant, durable, it lasts longer and it won’t break down into microplastics.

Why choose Beco pet products over other sustainable options?

While there are more eco-friendly pet products on the market these days, we believe Beco go further. Production is powered by the London sunshine and when the weather is inevitably a little grey, they source extra energy from a renewable supplier. Their warehouse switched from gas-powered machinery to electric and their forklifts and pump trucks are also powered by renewables. Moreover, they use an air source heat pump to heat their buildings and donate 1% of revenue to protecting, preserving and restoring the natural world.

We love bamboo, glass and china dog bowls but Beco has shaped their dog bowls with sustainability and practicability in mind. The waved edges of their pet bowls reduce mess, helping to keep your kitchen cleaner. Plus, it makes dinnertime easier and more enjoyable for your pets. Additionally, glass and china dog bowls are heavier and harder to clean.

Beco also sources their bamboo from the offcuts from chopstick factories. They ‘pick up the pieces’ and make the most of what is already around rather than creating new material.

One alternative to traditional poop bags is pooch papers. The recycled, non-chlorine bleached paper is eco-friendly but the thought of picking up dog poop with paper doesn’t appeal to me.
