Meet Hannah, our latest Home Club Member of the Month Hannah, who lives with her partner and pets in rural Fenland countryside. She enjoys reading, writing, going for walks with her dog and spending time with her loved ones. She especially loves learning about new things, and 3 years ago decided to embark on her own sustainable living adventure.
What made you want to live more sustainably?
To be honest, climate change wasn’t something I’d ever taken notice of before my early 20s – I never really paid attention in Geography classes at school (though I don’t think the curriculum at the time did a good job of demonstrating the dire situation we were and are in).
I think it was back in 2018 when I read a piece in the Guardian about global warming that it really hit home. It was then that I pledged I’d try and reduce my impact on the environment as much as possible. I began devouring all the information I could on and offline about climate change – once I lock my brain in on a topic, I research heavily.
The more I learned, the more devastated I became, and my passion to be sustainable just got stronger.
Which sustainable swap are you most proud of?
I mean, there are tons I could mention here, from my sustainable shopping habits to plastic free swaps, to changes in my diet – but if pushed to pick one, I think I’d have to say smart bulbs and smart plug technology.
Why do you love it so much?
Around the same time that I embarked on my sustainable journey, I moved into my first house with my partner. It’s quite a large house for the two of us, and we set about making it smarter (something I’ll admit my partner is more into than me). The reason I love the smart tech is that I’m genuinely SUCH a forgetful person; I’m known for being late everywhere because I left home and then turned around because I couldn’t remember if I switched off my straighteners, or the lights in the bathroom.
So smart plugs and bulbs are such a game-changer for me – I can have that reassurance that I’m in control of my energy usage no matter where I am. Plus, it’s great for security too, as I can activate my lights remotely for a few hours if I’m away!
