Bio-D Cleaning: Sustainable, Affordable, Yorkshire-Made

Think of all the various cleaning products you use around the home: washing up liquid, surface sprays, bleach, soaps, detergents, dishwasher tablets… it’s a pretty overwhelming amount of stuff. It’s no wonder we opt for the same supermarket products over and over. It keeps things simple.

A company taking responsibility

The Bio-D story starts with their founder, Michael Barwell, cleaning commercial ships in the 1980s. It involved a wide range of nasty cleaning chemicals, and he wore a protective respirator all day. When Michael found out that plenty of these chemicals could be found in household cleaners, he was shocked.

Michael was determined to find naturally-derived alternatives – ones that would clean safely and effectively without harming people or the environment. He wanted people to know what was in his products, and operate with transparency and integrity. In 1989, Bio-D was born. 

Because they make all their own products right here in the UK, Bio-D have complete traceability on all their ingredients and packaging. This way, they can ensure everything they use is ethically and sustainably sourced. In their packaging, they use either 100% recycled plastic, recyclable cardboard or metal tins. 

Bio-D is also a B Corp, meaning their business is a force for good – not just for the planet, but also their workers, communities and customers. Every year Bio-D publicly release a sustainability report to outline their impact some of their recent achievements include, a switch to online business meetings which has helped to decrease carbon emissions by 44%,  manufacturing all products using solar energy and achieving Gold in their Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions.

Natural, gentle ingredients

Have you struggled to find detergents that don’t irritate your skin? Do you spray down the bathroom and find you have to take a break from the fumes? Conventional cleaning chemicals can be the cause of all sorts of nasty allergic reactions, respiratory irritation and chemical burns.

Bio-D instead opts for gentler, natural ingredients – all vegan, cruelty free and Allergy UK certified. Bio-D products do not include common ingredients such as chlorine bleach, phthalates, phosphates, synthetic dyes or perfumes, enzymes, formaldehyde or GMO ingredients. These are all either harmful pollutants or known irritants.

Cleaning that doesn’t cost the earth
