3 reasons why hotels should install EV charging points

The journey from niche to normal is moving quickly for electric vehicles. The number of EVs on the road is growing every day, increasing the demand for EV charge points.

Charging a vehicle overnight is a preferred option and the reason behind it is rather obvious – waiting time. A mid-ranged EV can take up to 8 hours to be fully charged, making it far more convenient to charge overnight.

That brings us to hotels.

I think I’m safe in saying that the main reason people go to hotels is to have somewhere to stay overnight. People will usually have three criteria when picking a hotel: price, location and convenience.

The hotel market is tough, with providers battling on prices and benefits such as late checkout and free cookies. But the growth in the number of EVs on the road is opening doors to a new opportunity for hotels, bringing us to point number one as to why hotels should install EV charging points.

Reasons to install EV charge points

1. Gaining a competitive edge

If the owner of an EV is looking for a place to stay for the night and is torn between two similar hotels, an EV charge point could easily sway their decision. Range anxiety is an issue among EV drivers, so providing them peace of mind that they’ll have fully charged car in the morning will certainly give you a competitive edge.

2. Revenue stream

Hotels that place EV charge points in their car park will be able to generate a healthy stream of revenue. Many customers are not charged for their parking at a hotel, meaning many parking spaces aren’t bringing in any direct revenue.

However, by placing chargers in car parks hotels will be able to make ancillary revenue off their property. So if you’re responsible for your hotel’s revenue management, you should seriously consider EV charge points.

In this image you can see an example of the possible earnings from four EV charge points. Your revenue may be higher or lower, depending on the cost of electricity and how much you charge end users.

3. Supporting the planet

Arguably the most important reason of the three are the benefits that electric vehicles have on the planet. EVs have a significantly lower carbon footprint than petrol or diesel cars, helping countries across the globe reduce their carbon emissions in a global effort to prevent further global warming. By providing charging points in your hotel, you will be reducing people’s range anxiety thus encouraging them to buy an electric vehicle over a petrol/diesel vehicle.

Be ahead of the curve

Electric vehicles will be the majority within the next couple of decades, making it perfect sense for hotels to install charging points now. If your hotel is the only one within 5 miles that provides charging points, where do you think most road users are going to go in the future?
