Floodlights FAQ

Where can floodlights be used?

Floodlights are used in range of settings but are mainly used as outdoor lighting fixtures. They are used for domestic and business security, to highlight building architecture or landscapes, in retail to highlight the sign or name of the company and to light up the field, court and surrounding area at sporting venues and car parks

How are LED floodlights fitted?

They come with an adjustable mounting bracket, allowing you to tilt the flood to the required angle. That means they do not need a pole or special mount.

For fixing, all you should need are standard screws and plugs.

Our quality LED floodlights come with fitting and wiring instructions

Switching them on and off is straightforward, through a standard switch or fused spur. In industrial settings they can be on timers, or daylight sensors.

Can LED floodlights be controlled with a timer?

Yes. They are perfect for time-control.

Can you buy floodlights with sensors?

Yes. With PIR (Passive Infrared) sensor options, you would have a switch as an override to give you the best of both worlds!

What is the wattage of LED floodlights?

Our range is broad – from 10W, which is equivalent to a 150W halogen, 30W for standard 250W halogen up to 270W for heavy-duty areas.

Can you point LED floodlights in different directions?

Our LED floodlight range includes those that are adjustable vertically. With the versions with sensors, you can adjust the PIR independently – up/down, left and right. You can also adjust the PIR for time on, daylight level and sensor sensitivity.

Is it safe to send LED floodlights by post?

LED floodlights are very robust and they do not have fragile parts, unlike other options. But in the unlikely event that one arrives broken, we will replace with no charge with next-day delivery.

Can I use LED floodlights safely at home?

Yes. LED floodlights are ideal for security and to light up gardens in the evenings for when you have friends round. What’s more, most insects are not attracted to LED floodlights; they prefer UV light, which LED bulbs do not emit.

PIR options are perfect for security purposes as they detect movement. These are also better for energy saving as they only activate when motion is detected, so you are not constantly lighting your garden or driveway all night long.

Are LED floodlights like spotlights?

Spotlights have a narrower beam angle and are used for lighting up smaller areas or objects.  Floodlights have a wider beam and are used to light up larger surface areas.

Are LED floodlights superior to other types?

  • LED floodlights use a fraction of the energy consumed by other types and produce a brighter light.
  • LED lighting is a better choice when used in tandem with CCTV security – it is far superior than halogen or metal halide lamps as it gives a more even spread of light and no dark or bright spots. Other security advantages are very long product life and reliability, no maintenance, instant illumination, facility to work in challenging environments
  • The initial costs are quickly repaid through lower energy consumption.
  • LED floodlights also do not contain any harmful gases.
  • In contrast, incandescent light bulbs come in a flood light shape but these are being phased out under EU energy regulations. They often have poor quality light and emit a lot of heat.
  • Halogen floodlight bulbs emit light in the same manner as incandescent bulbs, by passing an electric current through a filament and the gas surrounds the filament to protect it but because of this, more heat is emitted, which could potentially be hazardous. While they also produce more light than incandescent bulbs, they are not friendly to the environment.
  • Fluorescent floodlights use a mix of electric currents with gases to emit light. The gases, however, are not environmentally friendly, and could also be harmful if exposed.

How long will an LED floodlight last?

LED floodlights have a very long lifespan, up to 50,000 hours compared to around 2,500 hours for halogen. This also means near zero maintenance – just install and enjoy. There are great savings in industrial settings where expensive machinery is required to reach high places

Are LED floodlights eco friendly?

LED floodlights are tough, durable and eliminate the need for frequent bulb replacements, with no hazardous waste. You can save as much as 80% on electricity costs by using an LED floodlight. Mercury and lead are not used in the production of LED floodlights, unlike other options, with no harmful emissions like carbon.

How safe are LED floodlights?

LED floodlights are one of the safest lighting options. They produce very little heat – standard light bulbs waste around 90% of the energy drawn because this is converted to heat. LEDs have no fragile filament, which is used in some other lights and is easily breakable.

Can I use LED floodlights in my warehouse?

LED floodlights are an excellent choice for warehouses. They do not emanate heat and conserve the maximum amount of electricity. Because they do not contribute to a rise in temperature, these lights are ideal for use in cold storage warehouses.

What type of light do LED floodlights produce?

The cool white (4000k) beam of light produced by the most popular LED floodlights is very similar to daylight, which is better and safer in every setting, including CCTV security but you can choose different colours with the same quality for softer, less harsh lighting effect

How robust are LED floodlights?

LED floodlights are resilient in a wide range of temperature fluctuations and environmental conditions. Unlike some other lights, LEDs remain stable and functional even in freezing conditions – ideal for cold warehouses and storage areas. Long life means very low maintenance and so greater savings.

Our experience with halogen floodlights is that It is difficult to replace the halogen bulb as you should not touch it because of moisture issues. The more times you unscrew the front glass to replace the halogen lamp the less effective the seal and so it is less waterproof. With less waterproof resistance, the halogen has to be replaced more often, with the rubber seal becoming more brittle and hard to put back in place.
